2020 Annual Contest Rules and Categories

NOTE:  We have noticed that the address to mail poems and fees for the 2020 Annual Contest has been incorrect.  We have corrected the address below which is:  ASPS Annual Contest, c/o Christy White, 1145 E. ASPS 2021 ANNUAL CONTEST GUIDELINES

 

ELIGIBILITY: Open to all


QUALIFICATIONS: Original, unpublished poems not currently submitted to other contest(s), except for Category 9. Any number of poems may be entered in each category, but each individual poem may be submitted only once per entire contest. All entries need not be sent in at one time. Submissions without fees will be disqualified.


ENTRY PAGES: Each entry consists of two separate pages to be submitted, either by postal mail or electronically (email).

Page One contains only the following information:

  • In the upper right corner of the page, list the Category Number and the Category Name
  • The Poem Title and the Poem itself are in the body of the page
  • DO NOT LIST YOUR NAME OR ANY IDENTIFYING NFORMATION ON PAGE ONE

Page Two is the Summary Page and contains only the following information:

  • In the upper right corner of the page, list the Poet’s Full Name, Address, Email, Telephone
  • In the body of the page, list the Poem Title and the First Line of the Poem. If you submit multiple poems, list multiple Poem Titles and First Lines of each poem.
  • NOTE: Entrants may elect to have their Poem(s) withheld from being published in the Annual 2021 Sandcutters in order to submit to other journals for publication. If you wish to withhold a particular poem from Sandcutters, indicate such on the Summary Page. You will still receive recognition in Sandcutters with your name and poem title indicated.

FORMAT:

  1. All information is to be clearly typed in English only, on 8 ½ x11 white paper, without lines or illustrations. No staples, unless a poem flows to a second page.
  2. For consistency, poems should be submitted in Times New Roman 12.
  3. Spaces or breaks between stanzas will count as a line. Introductory or editorial remarks, quotations, epigraphs, dedications, etc. will be included in the total line count.
  4. SUBMISSIONS NOT ADHERING TO THE STATED RULES WILL BE DISQUALIFIED.


DEADLINE: September 30, 2020, received by 11:59 pm. If mailing, send First Class or Priority Mail only (not Registered or any form of delivery requiring signature). Mail entries with self-addressed, stamped envelope to:

  1. Send both pages as Word document attachments
  2. Email Subject Line should read: 2020 CONTEST ENTRY
  3. In the body of the email, list:
  • Mailing address and phone number.
  • List poem titles, categories and fees sent.

  • Categories 1-9: $3.00 per poem
  • Category 10 (Youth ages 13-18): $1 per poem

  • Use “2020 ANNUAL CONTEST” for Categories 1-9
  • Use “2020 ANNUAL YOUTH CONTEST” for Category 10 (ages 13-18)


PRIZE AWARDS FOR EACH CATEGORY:

  • First Place $50
  • Second Place $30
  • Third Place $20


JUDGES: Qualified non-ASPS members. Decisions are final. List of judges to accompany results sent via SASE provided by contestant, at completion of competition.  List of judges also appears in Sandcutters
